Duckhouse//Sleigh - Parallel//Paysage
Glasgow Print Studio Ground Floor Gallery
Exhibition Runs: Saturday 9th April - Sunday 1st May

Preview: Friday 8th April 2016

Parallel//Paysage is an exhibition of new work by Rachel Duckhouse and Bronwen Sleigh. In October 2014 they travelled to Quebec City for an exchange exhibition between Glasgow Print Studio and Engramme. While there they undertook a research trip travelling through Quebec, Labrador and Newfoundland funded by the Bet Low Trust. This show presents the divergent responses of these two artists to their shared experience of the same landscapes through printmaking drawing and sculpture.

Rachel Duckhouse

Rachel Duckhouse is a Glasgow based artist working in a range of media including drawing and printmaking. The complex patterns and systems in nature, human behaviour and the built environment form the basis of her practice.

She makes responsive, research based work that reveals hidden patterns in specific contexts and landscapes. She uses the physical processes of drawing and printmaking to investigate relationships and flows of energy within real or imagined spaces or situations.

Rachel Duckhouse studied at Leeds College of Art and Winchester School of Art before settling in Glasgow where she is now based. She was Artist in Residence for the City of Calgary’s Watershed+ project in Canada 2012/13, and Associate Artist at Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art 2014. In 2016 she began a residency at Glasgow University’s School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, supported by the Leverhulme Trust.

She has exhibited in Canada, the USA, New Zealand and the UK and her work has been acquired by the British Museum.

Bronwen Sleigh

Bronwen Sleigh is a multi-disciplinary artist who takes inspiration from industrial architecture, unused and forgotten urban spaces, and environments at the edge of the city.  Her work provokes an extended and considered dialogue with these spaces, which she transforms through the processes of her practice.  She creates images and objects which resonate with the energy of these inhuman lands.  Sleigh’s work explores space rather than describing it, challenging perceptions of the ordinary by presenting it in an unfamiliar way.

Born in 1980 and raised in Mid-Wales, Bronwen Sleigh received her BA from the Glasgow School of Art and MA from the Royal College of Art, where she was selected for a six week exchange to The University of Calgary, Canada.  She has also worked for several prestigious arts organisations including the The Royal College of Art, The Royal Academy Schools as a Print Fellow and at Edinburgh Printmakers as their etching technician and collaborating printer.  The artist has exhibited widely both in the UK and overseas.  Her work is held in numerous collections around the world.  Sleigh lives and works in Glasgow.
