Introduction

Creative opportunities for beginners or intermediates. Each course offers practical, straightforward training and advice from established practicing printmakers.

Beginner/refresher courses are structured to develop key skills in each discipline. No prior experience of printmaking is needed.

Intermediate courses give a more in depth understanding of techniques and processes. Focused on professional workshop practice, improving competency and building confidence. Only suitable for people with recent experience or who have passed a beginner class in their chosen discipline.


Etching

Etching Beginner/Refresher
Etching uses acid to cut images into a metal plate, which is then inked and printed through a press. Learn the basics and explore this technique using soft grounds, hard grounds and aquatint to produce richly textured images.

Etching Intermediate *new*
Gain a more in depth understanding of techniques and processes. Includes an introduction to spit bite and à la poupée inking process. Artwork produced will be student led with guidance from tutor.

Introduction to Photo Etching
Intermediate
Learn how to work with a digital image to prepare it for photo etching, coat and expose photo etching plates and take a print. Bring a photograph, drawing or digital image no bigger than A4 to work with. Experience of etching and computer skills is required.

Woodcut

Woodcut Beginner/Refresher
Using a variety of chisels and gouges to cut lines and shapes into the surface of a block of wood, build up layers of colour to produce bold colourful images.

Evenings:

Taster Day: Woodcut Beginner/Refresher
This one day class will introduce you to the oldest printing technique first used in China around 800 A.D.
Beginning with a tour of our Focus on Woodcut exhibition you will learn about the technique and try it
out for yourself. Using chisels and gouges to cut lines from a block of Japanese plywood,a simple bold black and white print will be produced.

Digital Imaging

Digital Imaging Beginner/Refresher
An introduction to basic digital imaging using Adobe Photoshop. By scanning, working with layers, manipulating images and printing a simple digital artwork will be created. Basic computer skills helpful but no experience of Adobe Photoshop needed.

Preparing Artwork Digitally for Screenprint
Intermediate
Create separations for photo exposure screenprinting, transform photographs into random dot bitmap, create colour separations and half tone images. Prior knowledge of photo exposure screenprint process is required.

Screenprinting Beginner/Refresher
Learn the basics including preparation of screens and image separations, using a range of photographic and direct mark making techniques, work with stencils and print a small edition.

Collagraphy

Introduction to Collagraphy Beginner/Refresher *new two day course*
Using the low-tech medium of collograph, prepare plates using a variety of materials to build up layers and textures, experiment with inking and print in monotone and colour.

Weekend: 20th & 21st November 2010, 10am-5pm.
Cost: £120/£105 (members/concessions)

New Approaches to Collagraphy Beginner/Refresher *new two day course*
This class will demonstrate ways to combine traditional techniques: monotype, drypoint, woodcut and the Goetz carborundum process. Using a variety of supports including aluminium, cardboard, drypoint paper, perspex,steel, zinc & copper, rich textured images with delicate drawn lines can be produced. With an experimental approach you will create surprising textures, easily and quickly, use PVA glue to print onto canvas,fabric & paper.

Weekend: 31st July & 1st August 2010, 10am-5pm.
