Graphite Silkscreen printing with Kevin McGarry: Beginners/Refresher

The aim of this one day workshop is to introduce this interesting method of printmaking which allows a direct transfer of graphite drawings, powder and resist as a printed form. This method was developed at the University of Kent and Chester by Kevin McGarry and developed further during a residency at the Banff Centre, Alberta and at The Curwen Print Centre, Cambridge. The process is close to mono printing and yet final marks have been suggested of having the sensuous qualities of a lithographic print. This one day workshop will cover the graphite process and links to other printmaking methods. Examples and artwork by Kevin McGarry will also be shown.

Kevin McGarry gained a Batchelors of Fine Art from Surrey Institute and completed a Masters Degree in Graphic Fine Art from the Kent Art Institute. He has taught extensively and lectured at Anglia Ruskin University, University of Chester, Emily Carr Institute, Vancouver and University of British Columbia. Exhibitions include Exposure Gallery, Vancouver; The Banff Centre, Banff, Canada; The Drawing Centre, New York and Rhizome’s Art Base New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.

Waterless Lithography & Photo Lithography with Elspeth Lamb RSA: Intermediate

Waterless lithography is a process first developed in the commercial sector when attempts were made to find a process that avoided using water during printing. Nik Semenoff, Professor Emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan developed this process using ingenious drawing materials, such as toner powder from photocopy machines, to make ‘tusche’ wash solutions and toner chalks that resemble traditional lithographic mark-making.

Aimed at the experienced artist and printmaker, participants will combine two images to make a two layered print. The first separation will be a photographic image and the second layer will incorporate a printing plate of drawn marks. Using crayon, wash and line drawing materials experimentation will be encouraged. Images will be printed using lithographic inks on handmade papers.

Elspeth Lamb studied at Glasgow School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Tamarind Institute of Lithography, University of New Mexico USA. She is an elected member of the Royal Scottish Academy, Society of Scottish Artists and Royal Glasgow Institute. For 21 years, Elspeth taught at Edinburgh College of Art, latterly as Head of the Printmaking Department. She has been visiting lecturer at many colleges in the UK and has taught several workshops in lithography at the Joan Miro Foundation in Mallorca, Spain. Elspeth is represented in major collections including Japanese Consular Collection, The British Council, the MAG Collection, and the Joan Miro Foundation Collection.

Weekend: 1st & 2nd September 2012, 10am-5pm.
Cost: £145/£125 (members & concessions)
