workshop

In the workshop, the high standard of printmaking is encouraged by the range and versatility of the printmaking facilities. As a result, the Studio has attracted artists from the UK, Russia, Germany, Israel, Spain, Denmark, Brazil, Ukraine, India, Japan, South Africa, Australia, Canada and the USA among others, as well as students from art schools throughout the country.

Such a variety of visiting artists, along with the two hundred regular members of the studio ensures that a wide range of styles and techniques are being practised. This in turn creates a lively atmosphere and friendly environment, with the social and cultural mix that stimulates a constant discussion and exchange of philosophies, ideas and working practices. The workshop is run by an experienced staff of expert artist printmakers who can provide guidance and technical advice on all aspects of printmaking.

Glasgow Print Studio Visiting Artists and Artists Exchange Opportunities
Glasgow Print Studio Visiting Artists Programme welcomes experienced printmakers from around the world who wish to visit Scotland and work for a period of time in our Print Workshop. Fees are not only low but are flexible, depending on how long visiting artists wish to use our facilities. For example, those who visit for only a few days or weeks do not need to become a workshop member and can instead opt to pay ‘out of town users’ daily session fees; whilst those who visit for longer periods can pay membership fees and the cheaper block session fees which cover use of the workshop quarterly, six monthly or yearly. (Please see below for exact details of fees).Whilst we cannot offer accommodation for artists visiting on this basis, we may be able to help visiting artists locate accommodation by putting them in touch with local accommodation agencies or, for students, University Accommodation Offices. Also, although we cannot offer any financial support for visiting artists, we are happy to lend our support in writing any applications for funding which visiting artists may make to funding bodies in their own country.

Glasgow Print Studio also has a fairly active Artists Exchange Programme. Exchanges can be organised with similar organisations anywhere in the world. At this end, we are often able to gain financial support from Glasgow City Council to support artists use of our Workshop, accommodation expenses and a small per diem allowance (for food etc.); whilst the British Council will often cover travelling expenses. This, however, is usually dependent on such financial support being matched at the other end. We have around 200 artist/Workshop Members who would normally be invited to submit a proposal for consideration on the exchange, a selection being made usually either by ourselves or by our exchange partners, depending on the nature of the exchange.

Individuals interested in our Visiting Artists Programme, or organisations interested in setting up an Artists Exchange should contact Carolyn Nicoll, Administrator, for further information.

Printmaking courses for adults 2009

Creative opportunities for beginners or as a refresher course. Working with established artist printmakers, courses are structured to develop key skills in each discipline. No prior experience of printmaking needed.

Cost: Evening classes over 7 weeks £95 (GPS members £85).
Weekend classes £110 (GPS members £90).

Etching

A metal plate is coated with acid resistant wax or ground, then sharp tools are used to draw on the plate, remove the ground and expose the metal. The plate is immersed in acid that bites into the plate where the coating has been removed. Leaving different areas exposed to the acid for varying lengths of time affects depth and quality of the line. The finished plate is then printed.

Evenings: 7-9pm Tuesdays, 27th January - 10th March 2009.
Weekend: 10am-5pm 28th February + 1st March 2009.

Screenprinting
Photographic images or direct mark marking can be used in sreenprint. A stencil is created on a screen using photo emulsion films. Water based ink is squeezed through the screen onto the paper to produce the print. This process can be repeated and layers put down to create the final artwork.

Evenings: 7-9pm Tuesdays 27th January - 10th March 2009.
Weekend: 10am-5pm 28th February + 1st March 2009.

Relief Print
The oldest and most basic method of making a print. Based on the principle of cutting away part of the surface of a block so that the image area to be printed stands out in relief to form a printing surface. Ink is applied to the surface to be printed, paper is placed over the surface and pressure is applied by hand or by a press to transfer the ink from the block to the paper.

Evenings: 7-9pm Wednesdays 28th January - 11th March 2009.
Weekend: 10am-5pm 28th February + 1st March 2009.

Digital Imaging
Basic digital imaging using Adobe Photoshop CS3, including scanning, working with layers, manipulating images and printing. Basic computer literacy helpful but no experience of Adobe Photoshop needed.

Evenings: 7-9pm Wednesdays 28th January - 11th March 2009.
Weekend: 10am-5pm 28th February + 1st March 2009.
