Past Impressions - 30 Years in Print Glasgow Print Studio Archive Project |
Glasgow Print Studio has been awarded funding from Heritage Lottery Fund to enable the Archive to be enjoyed by wider audiences. GPS's Archive is a valuable resource deriving from 30 years of Scottish fine art printmaking. It contains over 1000 prints and related items including original blocks and plates, associated drawings, press cuttings, photographs and correspondence. This collection is not only unique in representing later 20th century printmaking developments in Scotland but is also a significant collection of artwork by major Scottish artists. The Past Impressions project will allow conservation and cataloguing of the collection and realise its potential through education.Glasgow Print Studio is entering an exciting period of redevelopment as part of a larger project to develop a new arts centre, Trongate 103, within the Merchant City. Our new premises will include an archive room and adjacent education room. As part of this exciting project we have appointed a part time Project Curator who will be responsible for cataloguing the works into an accessible archive, developing a database that will allow the Collection to be viewed on line by a wider audience and manage the safe relocation of the Archive into our new purpose built archive room. We have recruited 6 volunteers, with an interest in fine art printmaking and museum/ gallery work to help catalogue, package and relocate the archive into our newly refurbished venue. The project will provide participants with key skills and experience handling and cataloguing artwork and other archive materials. |

| Julie Muir, Manager at Youth Strategy based in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire approached GPS to provide a pilot project working with pupils who are experiencing barriers to their learning. The project began with a CPD training day for 6 staff members at Glasgow Print Studio workshop. The day introduced staff to printmaking processes, gave them an opportunity to view examples of prints from our Archive collection including Elizabeth Blackadder, Peter Howson, Ken Currie, John Byrne and many more leading Scottish artists. Followed by a tour of the workshop facilities, participants gained practical hands on experience working in relief printmaking processes led by Ian McNicol, a professional fine art printmaker Ian worked with 2 target age groups (S1/S2 and S3/S/4) for 1day a week for 12 weeks. The groups experimented with monoprinting, pressprint and etching techniques and learned how to print using a professional relief printing press. Some pupils produce Christmas cards for sale as part of the school Enterprise Initiative while others developed drawings into final printed images that will form part of an exhibition to be held later in the year. Comments from young people: It is the best thing I have ever done. I didn't think I could do it. Can we get them back again? The young people responded positively to the challenges and expectations of the artist and managed to produce work that reflected their own interests. In addition, the experience increased the self-esteem and confidence of our young people and enabled them to utilise their new skills in an enterprise project which continues to grow. Seeing my work in a public gallery was a good feeling, it made me feel proud John Conagh, Our Lady's High The New Editions exhibition showcased the work produced by pupils during a year long residency project in North Lanarkshire Council schools. The Print residency was a partnership project between the Glasgow Print Studio and North Lanarkshire Council and was joint funded by SAC and NLC. New Editions engaged children, young people and teachers in collaboration with visual artists, to create high quality artwork and resources for schools. Artists explored new developments in printmaking with participating schools and combined this with new media and digital technology. Participating schools include: - Cumbernauld High School - Our Lady's High Cumbernauld - Redburn School - St Lucy's Primary - St Barbara's Primary - St Mary's Primary - Glencryan School - St Margaret's of Scotland Primary - Carbrain Primary - Kildrum Primary - St Andrews Primary - Cumbernauld Primary - St Joseph's Primary What a fantastic showcase of student artwork, I spoke to a large number of people last night, all very proud of their contribution, students, teachers, artists and head teachers. The group worked with artists from the Glasgow Print Studio, Rosalind Lawless and Elspeth Lamb, producing small editions of screenprints and preparing collagraph plates to take with them to print in the Spanish workshop.
