The Tree Man/The Green Man,oil on canvas, 6’7 x 7’1, Steven Campbell. Jean-Pierre Léaud is the title given by Steven Campbell to this new body of work to be shown for the first time at Glasgow Print Studio Gallery. Indeed it is his first major exhibition in Glasgow since his groundbreaking exhibition at the Third Eye Centre in 1990. This is a showcase of 22 new large-scale canvases and four GPS publications which is deliberately timed to coincide with the Edinburgh International Festival and should be viewed as our contribution towards it. Undoubtedly one of the most imaginative and powerful painters of his generation, Steven Campbell links themes inspired by the mysteries and mythologies that surround the Rosslyn Chapel and ideas portrayed by French actor Jean-Pierre Léaud in films by Francois Truffaut. In the words of Steven Campbell: The "Title" - Jean-Pierre Léaud ties into two strands of thought. The apprentice and the master i.e. directly from the Rosslyn Chapel story then the fact that Leaud acted in Truffaut's Trilogy playing the master as a young man and also playing a director in Last Tango in Paris. Then myself acting as an apprentice paying homage through some of the images and painting style of Cezanne, Monet and Ensor. The other strand is the "actor". Many of the characters in the paintings are acting as someone else i.e. from Robert Louis Stevenson's" Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". Stevenson visited Rosslyn and in fact grew up not too far away from the Chapel. He appears in several of the paintings in different guises. The Green Man is a malevolent spirit more like "Harry Lime" in the Third Man. There is a great deal to do with the history of art even using for example Monet's background figures and bringing them to the front changing the roles so art itself becomes the drama. There is also a sense of playfulness in styles and techniques. The works are monumental, richly embroidered oil paintings on canvas that can't be taken in at a glance. They possess that rarely seen WOW factor that few other artists can muster up. A must see exhibition. Click here to download a full colour catalogue (PDF 2.8MB) of the works from this exhibition.
