Woodblock Prints - Chen Qi

Gallery I
23rd May - 28th June 2008

As part of China Now - the UK wide festival of Chinese Culture, Glasgow Print Studio and Ricefield Arts and Cultural Centre are proud to bring to Glasgow the remarkable works of Chinese printmaker Chen Qi.

Chen Qi makes works with great delicacy and outstanding ingenuity in employing traditional woodblock techniques to produce beautiful large scale prints. As well as a highly regarded printmaker Chen Qi is a Professor at Beijing University. He has exhibited extensively throughout the world as well as featuring in the major survey of contemporary Chinese printmaking, Chinese Printmaking Today, recently exhibited at the British Library.

Woodblock printmaking was invented in China around 1500 years ago. From the Diamond Sutra (dated 868) to the reproduction of paintings during the Ming Dynasty, from political expression and political propaganda to the vibrant and modern works being produced today, woodblock printmaking has had varied history in its place of origin. As a promoter of fine art printmaking Glasgow Print Studio is delighted to show works with such an exciting lineage.

During this exhibition Chen Qi will hold a master class in Chinese woodblock printmaking.
