McNicol, Ian

An initial career in Architecture and a fascination with the built environment resulted in Ian's early body of work: cityscapes and building images, carefully observed and executed using traditional etching techniques. Newer works have been influenced by Residencies to India and New Zealand; having children and relocating from Glasgow to the seaside town of Ayr. The response to these influences and lifestyle changes has been varied.

Recent works rely on a conscious shift from a strictly traditional to a more spontaneous approach based on experience and experimentation with techniques. Combining Multi Plate, colour and Jigsaw techniques with relief processes within landscape, seascape and abstract images. The attraction of etching and printmaking techniques in general is in the processes and technicalities of the medium which allow an artist to attain a huge variety of marks and tones to dramatic effect. New technologies and digital techniques have widened the potential for the creative side of image making.
