John Houston contributed greatly to Scottish art over the last half-century, both through his bold, expressionistic painting and as lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art. He travelled widely, but the land and seascape of his home country was his greatest inspiration. Houston was committed to an art based on direct observation, from which he produced paintings conveying an extraordinary range of emotion.
He was elected a Royal Scottish Academician, a Member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours and a Member of the Royal Glasgow Institute. A retrospective was held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2005. Houston lived and worked in Edinburgh and was married to the artist Elizabeth Blackadder. He sadly died in 2008.
