Do I need to take a beginners/refresher class to join the Glasgow Print Studio?

No, but you must have recent printmaking experience and be able to work safely and efficiently on your own within your chosen print medium.

I have no experience of printmaking. Which course is best for me?

We recommend our beginners/refresher courses. These courses are aimed at complete beginners but also act as a refresher for people who have printmaking experience but have not been active for some time.

It may be necessary to attend courses more than once to become an independent user of the workshop. All sessions must be attended to complete the course.

I have attended a beginners /refresher course and would like to join as a member, but I still feel I need support in order to build my confidence and use the workshop independently. What options do I have?

You can sign up for one of our intermediate courses. They run over 5 weeks in the evening and are aimed at giving a more in depth understanding of techniques and processes. Focused on professional workshop practice, improving competency and building confidence, the course is artist led with tutor on hand to provide guidance and support. Only suitable for people with recent experience or who have passed a beginner class in their chosen discipline.

One to One” training. What is this and how do I book it?

As an alternative to taking one of our intermediate classes, if you feel you would like a little more assistance before using the workshop independently, we can provide 1:1 training. Working with a member of staff, we can provide short training sessions targeting the specific parts of the process you feel less confident in.

Please contact our workshop manager, Claire Forsyth, to discuss your requirements and book 1:1 in advance. workshop@glasgowprintstudio.co.uk or 0141 55 6911

Please note 1:1 is not suitable for people who need to learn the whole process or have not previously used the technique to a proficient level.

I am confident in my printmaking area and would like to join as a member. What should I do next?

If you wish to join the studio to use the mediums you are proficient in and able to work safely and efficiently on your own, then the next step is to attend an orientation session where you will be shown around the studio and have access, payment and health and safety information explained to you. Membership payments and paperwork will also be processed at that time.

How often do they take place and how can I arrange an orientation session?

Orientation usually takes place once a week. Please contact our Workshop Manager, Claire Forsyth, to book in advance: workshop@glasgowprintstudio.co.uk or 0141 559 6911

Health and Safety regulations recommend that use of the workshop and attendance of courses are not advisable during pregnancy or for nursing mothers. Why is this?

There are a number of hazardous substances used within the workshop including white spirits, methylated spirits, solvent based varnishes (carcinogenic) nitric acid and resin dust which can cause lung damage and respiratory problems. These all require protective equipment. Some printing inks contain poisonous metals and carcinogenic substances which you should be aware of when using the workshop.

High risk groups include pregnant women, nursing mothers (neither of whom should be in the workshop) women of child bearing age and persons with allergies and sensitizations. For further advice contact workshop manager, Claire Forsyth at the GPS.
